A process of making paper or paper board comprising forming a cellulosic suspension, flocculating the suspension, draining the suspension on a screen to form a sheet and then drying the sheet, characterised in that the suspension is flocculated using a flocculation system comprising a clay and an anionic branched water soluble polymer that has been formed from water soluble ethylenically unsaturated anionic monomer or monomer blend and branching agent and wherein the polymer has (a) intrinsic viscosity above 1.5 dl/g and/or saline Brookfield viscosity of above about 2.0 mPa.s and (b) rheological oscillation value of tan delta at 0.005 Hz of above 0.7 and/or (c) deionised SLU viscosity number which is at least three times the salted SLU viscosity number of the corresponding unbranched polymer made in the absence of branching agent.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication de papier ou de carton, qui consiste à former une suspension cellulosique, à floculer la suspension, à égoutter la suspension sur un tamis pour former une feuille, puis à sécher la feuille. Le procédé se caractérise en ce que la suspension est floculée avec un système de floculation constitué d'argile et d'un polymère ramifié anionique soluble dans l'eau formé avec un monomère anionique éthyléniquement insaturé soluble dans l'eau ou mélange de monomère et un agent de ramification. Le polymère présente: a) une viscosité naturelle supérieure à 1,5 dl/g et/ou une viscosité Brookfield saline supérieure à environ 2,0 mPa; et b) une valeur d'oscillation rhéologique de tangente delta à 0,005 Hz supérieure à 0,7; et/ou c) un indice de viscosité SLV déionisé au moins équivalent à trois fois l'indice de viscosité SLV salé du polymère non ramifié correspondant obtenu sans agent de ramification.
