MANUFACTURE OF PEROXY CARBOXYLIC ACIDS FROM KRAFT BLACK LIQUOR FOR USE IN CHLORINE-FREE PULP BLEACHING OPERATIONS ABSTRACT A method for preparing peracids from a pulping black liquor stream, in a Kraft pulp mill process comprising: separating hydroxycarboxylic acids from a black liquor stream by preparing a separation solution of super-critical carbon dioxide with an effective amount of a low boiling point entrainer selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, acetone, methylethylketone, tetrahydrofuran and methyl-t-butyl ether to modify the solvation power of said super-critical carbon dioxide and extract preselected low molecular weight components; maintaining the separation solution at a temperature of at least about 70°C. and a pressure of at least about 1500 psi; contacting the separation solution with the black liquor while maintaining the temperature and pressure until the liquor and solution reach equilibrium to extract preselected low molecular weight components from the black liquor; and isolating the entrainer/extracted components portion from the separation solution by reducing the pressure, lowering the temperature, or a combination of reducing the pressure and lowering the temperature, decarboxylating the hydroxycarboxylic acid in water solution using air oxidation in the presence of dissolved catalysts, to produce aldehydes; and oxidizing using catalysts of the aldehydes to produce peracids.
