ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process for the manufacture of polyvinylpyrrolidone- iodine from polyvinyl pyrrolidone and iodine which comprises: - the free radical polymerization of vinylpyrrolidone in a anhydrous organic solvent selected from the group consisting of aromatic hydrocarbons, lower aliphatic monohydric alcohols of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence of free radicals sup- plied by an organic per-compound in an amount of about 0.5 to 5% by weight on the basis of the weight of the vinylpyrrolidone; - converting the obtained polyvinylpyrrolidone, after completion of polymerization and before drying, into an aqueous solution by adding water and distilling off the organic solvent, the aqueous solution then being subjected to treatment with steam and reacting the aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone solution with iodine.
