ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydroxysulphobetaines by reacting a C10-C25 alkyldimethylamine with an alkali salt of a halohydroxypropane sulphonic acid in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol, which preferably contains up to 10%wt of water, the molar ratios of the tertiary amine and the salt of the halohydroxypropane sulphonic acid applied being in the range of from 1 to 4.5 The present invention relates in particular to the preparation of novel 3-sec. n-C12-C18 alkyldimethylammonio-2-hydroxy-1-sulphonates by reacting epichlorohydrin sulphonate with sec. n-C12-C18 alkyldimethylamine in the presence of a solvent mixture of 2-propanol and water. The hydroxysulphobetaines can be used very suitably for the cleaning of, for instance, cotton and man-made fibres at low temperatures, since they suffer less from the absence of builders than all known detergents.
