ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : Symmetrical carotenoids are manufactured from the molecular halves thereof by a process wherein phosphonium salts of the molecular halves of these sym- metrical carotenoids containing as substituents besides said molecular halves three aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radicals are oxidized by electrochemical anodic oxidation in a solvent and in the presence of a base at temperatures at from -20 to +60°C with a current density of from 1 to 500A/dm2.
