ABSTRACT A method and apparatus is disclosed for producing thin hot rolled metal sheet and strip. A slab of heated metal is rolled through a finishing mill to a first thickness such that it will not become airborne on a runout table following the finishing mill. When a predetermined amount of rolled metal is produced at the first thickness, the roller gaps in the finishing mill are adjusted to reduce the rolled metal thickness to its desired final thickness at which it normally would become airborne on the runout table.
