A method of making a component (2) of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis, which has a bearing surface whose shape corresponds approximately to a part of a sphere and is symmetrical about its polar axis, involves use of a cutting tool (6) which has a circular cutting edge (12) and which can be rotated about an axis (8) which is perpendicular to the plane containing the said cutting edge (12). The method involves (a) rotating the component about its polar axis (4) and rotating the cutting tool (6) about its axis (8), with the cutting edge (12) of the cutting tool (6) in contact with the surface of the component (2); (b) moving the cutting tool (i) in a direction parallel to the polar axis (4) of the component (2) while leaving the angle between the axis of the cutting tool (6) and the polar axis of the component (2) unchanged, and (ii) along its axis (8); and (c) repeating step (a). The movements (i) and (ii) of the cutting tool (6) cause the radius of curvature of the bearing surface to change continuously and monotonically as the angle between the radius and the polar axis of the component changes, so that the shape of the bearing surface deviates from that of a true sphere in such a way that discontinuities in the shape of the bearing surface as a result of individual movements are minimised.

Procédé de fabrication d'un élément (2) de prothèse orthopédique d'articulation comportant une surface d'appui, dont la forme correspond approximativement à une partie de sphère et est symétrique par rapport à son axe polaire. Le procédé comprend l'utilisation d'un outil de coupe (6) présentant une arête tranchante (12) circulaire et qui peut tourner autour d'un axe (8) perpendiculaire au plan contenant ladite arête (12). Le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à : (a) faire tourner l'élément autour de son axe polaire (4) et faire tourner l'outil de coupe (6) autour de son axe (8), l'arête tranchante (12) de l'outil (6) étant en contact avec la surface de l'élément (2) ; (b) déplacer l'outil de coupe (y) dans une direction parallèle à l'axe polaire (4) de l'élément (2) sans changer l'angle formé par l'axe de l'outil (6) et l'axe polaire de l'élément (2), et (z) le long de son axe (8); et (c) répéter l'étape (a). Les déplacements (x) et (y) de l'outil de coupe (6) modifient de manière continue et régulière le rayon de courbure de la surface d'appui, à mesure que l'angle entre le rayon et l'axe polaire de l'élément varie ; la forme de la surface d'appui ainsi obtenue diverge de celle d'une sphère parfaite de telle sorte que les discontinuités de la forme de la surface d'appui résultant de mouvements individuels sont réduites.
