A method of producing explosive grade porous ammonium nitrate from any type of prilled or granulated nonporous substrate, including those containing additives used to modify physical and mechanical properties. The inventive method comprises wetting the substrate with an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate in quantities equivalent to 0.2-3 % of actual water and heating the substrate up to a temperature sufficient to ensure that the phase III->II polymorphic transition has occurred. After the thermal treatment, the porous product can be mixed with oil directly, or dried and cooled using standard engineering procedures. The water content of the substrate throughout the actual III->II transition period must be maintained at least at 120 % of the quantity required to fully hydrate all the hydratable additives present in the substrate but not less than 0.2 % of the weight of the substrate.
Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé qui permet de produire du nitrate d'ammonium poreux de qualité explosive à partir de n'importe quel type de substrat non poreux particulaire ou granulaire, y compris des substrats contenant des additifs utilisés pour modifier les propriétés physiques et mécaniques. Ce procédé consiste à mouiller le substrat avec une solution aqueuse de nitrate d'ammonium en quantité équivalente à 0,2 à 3 % de l'eau présente et à chauffer le substrat jusqu'à une température suffisante pour assurer que la transition polymorphe de phase III à phase II se produise. Après ce traitement thermique, ce produit poreux peut être mélangé avec de l'huile directement, ou alors il peut être séché et refroidi à l'aide de techniques de transformation standards. La teneur en eau de ce substrat pendant toute la période de transition effective de phase III à phase II doit être maintenue à un taux d'au moins 120 % de la quantité requise pour hydrater complètement tous les additifs hydratables présents dans le substrat mais à un taux qui n'est pas inférieur à 0,2 % du poids du substrat.
