ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a map navigation system for aircraft (aeroplanes). The system comprises a map position indicator which on a map display shows a continuously updated course and position-oriented map image. The system also com- prises a computer unit (a calculating unit) which achieves the updating of the map image and also in an introductory stage, on the basis of the geographic co-ordinates of two or more points on the map, calculates the map scale on the map display. Transparencies of relevant navigation maps are used for the map position indicator. When preparing these pictures, no special consideration need be taken to the scale of the pictures, as this is calculated against the back- ground of the map image on the map display.
