A transmission for a stern drive planing power boat having an engine (18) inboard of and adjacent to the stern (16) of the boat and connected through the stern of the boat by means of a universal coupling (32) to a steerable outboard drive leg (30), comprises an epicyclic gearbox (50) mounted inboard on the rear of the engine with at least two alternative selectable gear ratios, and an output shaft (54) connected to the universal coupling. The lowest of the said ratios is a direct drive ratio permanently connected to the output shaft by a one-way clutch (64). Gear change control means may inhibit the selection of a higher gear ratio below a predetermined engine speed, automatically select the gear ratios in response to engine speed, and/or inhibit the selection of a higher gear when a reverse gear is selected.
Transmission destinée à une vedette rapide à carène planante munie d'un moteur (18) à l'intérieur de la coque à proximité de l'arrière (16) du bateau relié par l'arrière du bateau au moyen d'un accouplement universel (32) à un bras d'entraînement hors-bord orientable (30). Une boîte de vitesse épicycloïdale est montée à l'intérieur de la coque à l'arrière du moteur, avec au moins deux rapports de vitesse sélectionnables alternativement, et un arbre de sortie (54) est relié à l'accouplement universel. Le moins élevé de ces rapports est un rapport de prise directe relié de façon permanente à l'arbre de sortie par un embrayage à roue libre (64). La commande de changement de vitesses peut inhiber la sélection d'un rapport de vitesse plus élevé, en dessous d'une vitesse de moteur prédéterminée, sélectionner automatiquement les rapports de vitesse en fonction de la vitesse de moteur, et/ou inhiber le choix d'un rapport plus élevé lorsqu'une vitesse de marche arrière est sélectionnée.
