A variable-buoyancy marine riser (10) and a method for providing and adjusting the buoyancy for such a riser. The riser (10) is comprised of a main riser conduit (11) on which a plurality of cans (20) are affixed. A slurry of particulate, buoyant material (31), e.g. small hollow spheres (30), is pumped into the cans to displace the seawater therein and give buoyancy to the riser. When it is desired to reduce the buoyancy of the riser, the spheres (30) are removed by merely opening the cans (20) and allowing the surrounding seawater to displace the spheres from the cans (20).

L'invention concerne un tube prolongateur (10) à flottabilité variable et un procédé pour conférer la flottabilité à ce tube prolongateur et pour la modifier. Le tube prolongateur (10) est constitué d'une conduite principale (11) de tube prolongateur sur laquelle on peut fixer plusieurs bidons (20). Une suspension à base d'un matériau flottant particulaire (31) tel que de petites sphères creuses (30) est pompée dans ces bidons afin d'en déplacer l'eau de mer et conférer la flottabilité au tube prolongateur. Lorsque l'on veut diminuer la flottabilité du tube prolongateur, on évacue les sphères (30) en ouvrant simplement les bidons (20) et permettant ainsi à l'eau de mer environnante d'évacuer les sphères desdits bidons.
