A marker suitable as a golf fairway marker comprises a hollow body suitable for installation in a hole in the ground, and a plunger mounted for movement into the body between a normal, raised position in which an upper portion of the plunger is readily visible, and a lowered position in which the plunger is accommodated in the hollow body and where it does not interfere with mowing machines. A spring urges the plunger into the normal, raised position, and a shock absorber or damper acts between the body and the plunger for delaying movement from the lowered position to the raised position, so that the plunger remains lowered until a mowing machine has passed.
