ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the marking of metal, e.g. steel billets, by spraying aluminium through a stencil, the sprayed metal tends to build up on the stencil and render it inoperative. To reduce this possibility a release compound is applied to the stencil(s) and the stencil(s) is/are cleaned periodically in use. The release compound can be sprayed-on and cleaning can be effected by a rotary brush, both movable with the metal spray nozzle.
