ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for effecting heat or mass transfer between two fluids through a membrane comprises a first conduit for flow of one fluid, a second conduit for flow of a second fluid, both said conduits being at least partly defined by said membrane and the configuration of at least a part of the membrane surface of said first conduit in a plane orthogonal to the general direction of flow varying periodically along the general direction of flow, with ratios of pitch to depth of at least about 2:1 and generally not in excess of about 8:1, and a roller pump connected to said first conduit for producing along said first conduit a continual pulsatile flow of low amplitude fluctuation compared with the mean flow rate at a properly selected flow velocity whereby a component of motion is convectively induced in said fluid which is mutually orthogonal to the surface of the membrane and the general direction of flow. The apparatus is particularly applicable for use in blood oxygenation and dialysis and as heat exchange apparatus for various fluids including blood. Also disclosed is a circulating system suitable for employing such apparatus in blood oxygenation, as well as a blood reservoir particularly adapted for use in such circulating system.
