The ionization efficiency of a mass spectrometer is increased by creating a potential well between the electron source (12) and the electron collector (20). The potential well is created by applying to the collector a reflection potential having an amplitude which is the same as or substantially the same as the amplitude of the potential applied to the electron source and a polarity which is the same as the polarity of the electron source potential. The potentials applied to the electron source and electron collector are relative to the ionization region effected between the source and collector. Many of the electrons produced by the electron source oscillate back and forth in the potential well thereby allowing those electrons a greater opportunity to interact with sample molecules to thus increase ionization efficiency.

L'efficacité d'ionisation d'un spectromètre de masse est augmentée par création d'un puits de potentiel entre la source (12) d'électrons et le collecteur (20) d'électrons. Le puits de potentiel est créé par application au collecteur d'un potentiel de réflexion ayant une amplitude qui est identique ou pratiquement identique à l'amplitude du potentiel appliqué à la source d'électrons et une polarité qui est identique à la polarité du potentiel de la source d'électrons. Les potentiels appliqués à la source d'électrons et au collecteur d'électrons sont fonction de la région d'ionisation obtenue entre la source et le collecteur. De nombreux électrons produits par la source d'électrons oscillent selon un mouvement de va-et-vient dans le puits de potentiel, ce qui confère à ces électrons une plus grande opportunité d'interaction avec des molécules échantillons et qui accroît donc l'efficacité d'ionisation.
