Methods and apparatus for screening diverse arrays of materials are provided. In particular, techniques are provided for rapidly characterizing compounds in combinatorial arrays of materials for discovering and/or optimizing new materials with specific desired properties. According to one aspect, a scanning mass spectrometer is used which includes an ionization chamber and a collector that outputs an electrical signal responsive to the quantity of gas ions contacting the collector surface. A conduit system selectively withdraws samples from the array of materials, passing the samples into the ionization chamber. In a specific embodiment, reactants are passed through the conduit system to the selected regions of interest on the substrate. Means are provided to selectively heat regions on the substrate.

Des techniques sont fournies, en particulier, pour caractériser rapidement des composés dans des groupes combinatoires de matériaux, de façon à découvrir et/ou optimiser de nouveaux matériaux ayant des propriétés désirées spécifiques. Selon un aspect de la réalisation, on utilise un spectromètre de masse de criblage qui inclut une chambre d'ionisation et un collecteur produisant un signal électrique qui réagit à la quantité d'ions gazeux contactant la surface du collecteur. Un système de conduit extrait, de manière sélective, des échantillons des groupes de matériaux et fait passer lesdits échantillons dans la chambre d'ionisation. Selon une réalisation spécifique, des réactants sont introduits dans le système de conduit de façon à sélectionner des régions d'intérêt sur le substrat. Des moyens sont également, fournis pour chauffer, de manière sélective, des régions du substrat.
