A modified mass-spectrometer has a low-power radio-frequency plasma source which is coupled with a MS analyzer through an adjustable interface. The interface, including a sampler orifice and a skimmer cone, can be positioned along XYZ axes without a substantial loss of the analytical atmosphere. The sampler orifice and the skimmer cone are electrically insulated and a controlled electrostatic field is created thereon to facilitate the selection of atomic and ionized species for MS analysis.
