A method for selecting precursor ions in an electrostatic trap comprises injecting ions into the electrostatic trap, the ions including precursor ions having mass-to-charge ratios of interest and unwanted ions. An RF voltage is applied to at least one electrode of the electrostatic trap. The RF voltage is in resonance with the axial oscillation of the precursor ions at a correct phase such that the precursor ions, but not the unwanted ions, are brought into the plane of symmetry of the electrostatic trap.
