Disclosed is a conversion apparatus that converts and adapts standard processor bus protocol and architecture, such as the MicroChannel~ bus, to more progressive switch interconnection protocol and architecture. The invention extends existing the bus-based architecture to perform parallel and clustering functions by enabling the interconnection of thousands of processors. A conversion apparatus is disclosed for controlling the transfer of data messages from one nodal element across a switch network to another nodal element by using direct memory access capabilities controlled by intelligent bus masters. This approach does not require interactive support from the processor at either nodal element during the message transmission, and frees up both processors to perform other tasks. In addition, the communication media is switch-based and is fully parallel, supporting n transmissions simultaneously, where n is the number of nodes interconnected by the switching network.
Appareil de conversion permettant de convertir et d'adapter une architecture et un protocole de bus de processeur de type standard, p. ex. bus Microchannel~, à une architecture et un protocole d'interconnexion par commutateur de type plus progressif. L'invention adapte l'architecture à bus existante pour lui permettre d'exécuter des fonctions parallèles et de groupage en rendant possible l'interconnexion de milliers de processeurs. Un appareil de conversion présenté commande le transfert de messages de données d'un élément nodal d'un réseau de commutation verse un autre élément nodal, en utilisant des capacités d'accès direct en mémoire commandées par des bus maîtres intelligents. Cette approche n'exige pas de soutien interactif de la part du processeur à aucun des éléments nodaux durant la transmission du message et libère les deux processeurs pour l'exécution d'autres tâches. En outre, les supports de transmission, qui utilisent des commutateurs et sont entièrement parallèles, permettent n transmissions simultanément, n correspondant au nombre de noeuds interconnectés par le réseau de commutation.
