Packaging and wrapping material for protecting products includes an outer layer comprising a film having a predetermined shrink response in response to heat applied to the film and which, when shrunk and then cooled, forms a shell sufficiently rigid to be self supporting and shape retaining when removed from the article. The film is intermittently bonded to a nonwoven fabric so that the nonwoven and film move relative to one another when the film is shrunk. The nonwoven separates the product from the film (which may be abrasive), and also absorbs impact forces applied to the shell, to prevent damage to the product. The material is formed into a bag into which the product is place or which is installed aver the product. The bag is then shrunk around the product. The bag may be evacuated before being sealed and shrunk to prevent residua! moisture from damaging the product.
