The invention relates to a modification material containing a modification substance which enhances the fluorescence of diseased cells or of bacteria by raising the production of fluorescent intermediate products of metabolism. A basic component of the modification material is dimensionally stable in comparison with water and therefore keeps the modification substance in contact with the tissue area to be examined until a sufficient quantity of modification substance has been metabolized.
