2076973 9112948 PCTABS00007 While rotary presses having plural die cavities in a rotary table (104) and plural punches (130, 132) cooperating to mold material in die cavities are known for feeding and pressing powder into tablets, such is not usually used for pressing rope-like strips of food material into tablets. The invention provides control means for use in such presses to sense the amount of material in cavities and thereby control the rate of movement of material to the cavities. This is achieved by sensing axial movement or flexing of plates (116 and 120) which drive punches (130, 132) as an indication of the amount of material in cavities.
