A broadcasting unit attachment for use on a material spreader of the type for applying a dressing of material on ground surfaces such as golf courses. The attachment is particularly designed for use on spreaders normally used to apply light topping when on occasion it is desired to spread an coven heavy application of top dressing. The attachment includes a rotary brush mounted in a framework for locating the brush below a rear drop-off end of a conveyor of the spreader, the brush having a drive for rotating the brush in a direction so that bristles at the top of the brush travel in a rearward direction relative to the spreader beneath the drop-off end whereby particles of the material are mainly propelled upwardly and rearwardly of the spreader as they fall to the rotating brush. A deflector plate is located above the rotating brush so that those particles having an upward component of travel strike an underside of the deflector plate where they are directed more immediately towards the ground surface being covered.
