The present invention provides pharmaceutical compositions in the form of relatively high molecular weight biocompatible polymers such as polyethylene glycol, optionally supplemented with a protective polymer such ad dextran and/or essential pathogen nutrients such as L-glutamine. Also provided are methods for preventing or treating gut-derived sepsis attributable to intestinal pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa by administering high molecular weight polyethylene glycol as well as methods for monitoring the administration of high molecular weight polyethylene glycol, such as in methods of preventing, ameliorating or treating microbe-induced epithelial disorders, as exemplified by gut-derived sepsis. Frequently, gut-derived sepsis arises as a complication in mammals recovering from surgical intervention or suffering from a disease or disorder, providing indications of suitable animals to receive preventative treatment. Finally, the invention provides a composition comprising infant formula and polyethylene glycol and methods for using that composition.
L'invention concerne des compositions pharmaceutiques sous forme de polymères biocompatibles de poids moléculaire relativement élevé, du type polyéthylène glycol, éventuellement complétés par un polymère de protection, du type dextrane, et/ou des nutriments pathogènes essentiels, du type L-glutamine. L'invention concerne également des procédés pour la prévention ou le traitement de septicémie d'origine intestinale due à des agents pathogènes intestinaux, du type Pseudomonas aeruginosa, par administration de polyéthylène glycol de poids moléculaire élevé, ainsi que des procédés visant à contrôler l'administration de ce polyéthylène glycol de poids moléculaire relativement élevé, par exemple des procédés visant à prévenir, améliorer ou traiter les troubles épithéliaux d'origine microbienne, du type septicémie d'origine intestinale. Il est fréquent que cette septicémie se présente comme une complication chez des mammifères qui se rétablissent après une intervention chirurgicale ou qui souffrent de maladie ou de trouble. Il s'agit d'animaux qui présentent alors un profil approprié à un traitement préventif. Enfin, l'invention concerne une composition renfermant une formule enfantine et du polyéthylène glycol, ainsi que des procédés relatifs à l'utilisation de cette composition.
