The present invention relates to a novel retrovirus associated with autoimmune disease. The present invention provided nucleotide and amino acid sequence relating to GAG, PRO and POL proteins of the retrovirus as well as diagnostic techniques and antibodies for use in diagnosis. The retrovirus (HRV-5) according to the present invention has been detected in inflamed joints (RA, osteoarthritis (OA), reactive arthritis and psoriatic arthritis) but not normal synovium. Further, HRV-5 proviral DNA has been detected in blood from patients with RA and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Cette invention a trait à un nouveau rétrovirus associé à une maladie auto-immune. Elle concerne un nucléotide et une séquence aminoacide en rapport avec des protéines GAG, PRO et POL du rétrovirus. Elle porte également sur des techniques diagnostiques et sur des anticorps utilisés en manière de diagnostic. Le rétrovirus (RVH-5) de l'invention a été décelé dans des articulations enflammées (polyarthrite rhumatoïde, arthrose, arthrite positive et polyarthrite psoriasique) mais pas dans le liquide synovial sain. Il a également été décelé de l'ADN proviral de RVH-5 dans du sang de patients atteints de polyarthrite rhumatoïde et de lupus érythémateux disséminé.
