The invention is directed to a method of detecting a malignancy or a pre- malignant lesion in breast or other tissue, or a pathologic condition, by detecting the presence of single-chain or two-chain forms of matriptase in the tissue. The invention is further directed to a method of treating malignancies, which have the phenotype of matriptase production by administering a tumor formation inhibiting effective amount of a concentrate of Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBIC), or other matriptase inhibitor. The invention also is directed to nucleic acids encoding a matriptase protein or fragments thereof, and their use for structure elucidation and modeling to identify other inhibitors of matriptase, as well as to methods of identifying matriptase modulating agents, including activators and inhibitors.
La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant de détecter un état malin ou une lésion pré-maline du sein ou d'un autre tissu ou un état pathologique, et ce, par détection de la présence de formes à une ou deux chaînes de matriptase dans le tissu. L'invention concerne également un procédé permettant de traiter des malignités qui ont le phénotype de la production de matriptase, et ce, par administration d'une formation tumorale bloquant une quantité efficace d'un concentré de l'inhibiteur de Bowman-Birk (BBIC), ou d'autres inhibiteurs de la matriptase. L'invention concerne aussi, d'une part des acides nucléiques codant pour la protéine qu'est la matriptase ou pour certains de ces fragments, d'autre part leur utilisation pour l'élucidation et la modélisation de structure permettant d'identifier d'autres inhibiteurs de la matriptase, et enfin des procédés permettant d'identifier des agents modulant la matriptase, y-compris les activateurs et inhibiteurs.
