A matrix of spherical photovoltaic cells includes an electrically conductive first layer, an electrically conductive second layer and a plurality of spherical photovoltaic cells disposed between and in electrically conductive communication with the first layer and the second layer. The second layer is either transparent or translucent, such that light escapes from the spherical photovoltaic cells through the second layer. The matrix is used with solar thermal collectors.
