A mattress handle having improved load transfer characteristics is provided. The handle has a strap held at both ends by a handle connection. The handle connection comprises cooperating members exerting a normal force on the strap and the mattress border to increase the frictional force between the strap and the border. The friction between the strap and the border transfers the load applied to the handle. A method for installing the mattress handle is also disclosed.
