A handle is applied to a mattress border by preparing a length of handle strapping having opposite longitudinal ends and aligning it longitudinally on a strip of mattress border material, producing spaced tucks from the mattress material, the tucks extending across a width of the material, placing the length of handle strapping on the mattress border with its longitudinal ends adjacent the tucks, folding the tucks towards each other over the opposite longitudinal ends of the lengths of strapping, and sewing the tucks to the border material across the width of the latter to capture the opposite ends of the handle strapping. The border material and the handle strapping are drawn from separate rolls, lengths of handle strapping are severed from a free end of a strapping roll, the tucks are formed in a length of mattress border material drawn from a mattress border material roll, and the severed lengths of strapping are conveyed to an deposited between the tucks. The process is repeated at predetermined intervals along the border material to provide as many handles as may be required around a perimeter of a mattress border to be formed by the mattress border material, and a length of the mattress material incorporating the handles is severed from the roll and joined end to end to form the mattress border.
