ABSTRACT A "mattress-type" gabion is formed from panels of wire netting to create a mesh container which can be filled with stones, gravel or other ballast and then used to prevent erosion along river embankments, coastal areas et cetera. The bottom sheet includes transverse ribs formed by folding the bottom sheet at various points therealong, the folded ribs extending the full height of the base container portion. In order to strengthen the ribs the two panels of each rib are joined together by a specific twisting operation adjacent the fold line between each rib panel and the bottom sheet of the base container.
