The present invention provides an improved rothopedic system (10) for the modification of the distance between the maxilla (21) and zygoma (22). In a preferred embodiment, the system includes proximal and distal footplates attached to an orthopedic device. The distal footplate is attached to the zygoma (22), with the proximal footplate being mechanically coupled to the maxilla (21). This mechanical coupling is achieved either through attachment directly to the maxilla (21) or by attachment to a construct which is then wired to the patient's teeth. The orthopedic device, which may be a distractor, allows for modification of the distance between the maxilla (21) and zygoma (22). The entire system can advantageously be placed intra-orally within a patient. In a preferred embodiment, the footplates are also detachable from the orthopedic device and are composed of a bioresorbable material, such that they will be absorbed by the patient's body. Methods for using this novel orthopedic system are also disclosed.

L'invention concerne un système (10) orthopédique amélioré permettant de modifier la distance entre la mâchoire supérieure (21) et l'apophyse zygomatique (22). Dans une forme de réalisation préférée, le système comprend des plaques de fixation proximale et distale fixées à un dispositif orthopédique. La plaque de fixation distale est fixée à l'apophyse zygomatique (22), et la plaque de fixation proximale est couplée mécaniquement à la mâchoire supérieure (21). Ce couplage mécanique est réalisé soit par fixation directe à la mâchoire supérieure (21), soit par fixation à un ensemble qu'on fixe ensuite par des ligatures à la dent du patient. Le dispositif orthopédique, qui peut être un séparateur, permet de modifier la distance entre la mâchoire supérieure (21) et l'apophyse zygomatique (22). Le système entier peut être placé avantageusement à l'intérieur de la bouche d'un patient. Dans une forme de réalisation préférée, les plaques de fixation peuvent aussi être détachées du dispositif orthopédique et sont constituées d'une matière biorésorbable pouvant être absorbée par le corps du patient. Des procédés d'utilisation de ce nouveau système orthopédique sont également décrits.
