ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention comprises a method, a keyboard and an input apparatus for entering ideographic characters of an ideographic written language into a system. The keyboard has entry keys for representing basic strokes, radicals and complete ideographic characters. Each key is associated, in a first form, with either: a. one of a plurality of stroke identification indicia; or, b. one of a plurality of frequently used radicals; and, in a second form, with a frequently used complete ideographic character. The strokes are divided into a plurality of distinct groups. Each group is assigned one of such stroke identification indicia whereby a given stroke is represented by the assigned stroke identification index. There are sufficient number and variety of stroke identification indicia to allow any ideographic character to be represented by a series thereof. A first selection key identifies a series of entry key actuations as being in such first form representing a complete ideographic character. A second selection key identifies an entry key actuation as being in such second form representing a complete ideographic character. The input apparatus incorporates the keyboard and includes an interpreter device to interpret the keyboard signals. The method comprises dividing the strokes into a plurality of distinct groups, assigning each group with a stroke identification index as described above, associating the keys with symbols and functions as described above and interpreting signals from the keyboard to generate code signals representing the ideographic characters.
