ABSTRACT A three-stage process for gasification of a solid fuel to a product gas with a high heating value and low ni- trogen content by use of an iron-containing material. The latter is first heated to a high temperature by hot combus- tion gases and is then brought into contact with the solid fuel for the second stage. The fuel is thus decomposed pyrolytically to a residue and a pyrolysis gas and the latter partially reduces the iron containing material. Fin- ally, the residue and the iron containing material are oxi- dized by water or water vapour to produce product gas with simultaneous oxidation of the iron containing material.
