Abstract The invention relates to a means for compensating for variations in matrix height and/or paper thickness on a rotary printing press, especially intended for a rotogravure printing press comprising pairs of cooperating rollers/cylinders. One or more inking rollers transfer the primary colour (or chemicals, coating composition, lacquer, etc.) to a matrix mounted on a matrix cylinder which cooperates with the inking roller and is adapted via the matrix to transfer the ink or other substance to a moving web of paper which passes over a counterpressure cylinder adapted to press the paper against the matrix during the ink transferring process. The center-to-center distance between the axes of cooperating pairs of rollers/cylinders is in a manner known per se adjustable to varying matrix and/or paper thicknesses. The compensating means is based on the use of flexible support rings which are compressed and further reduce the center-to-center dis- tance(s), or nip, between the rollers. The flexible support rings are elastically deformed as they are compressed during the initial adjustment of the roller nip until equilibrium is reached at the desired center-to-center distance between the two rollers in the pair. The compensating means is flexible around this nip width (the initial or basic adjustment) and can thereafter adjust and accom- modate to small variations in matrix and/or paper thickness. The compensating means comprises flexible members that constitute part of the support means for the cooperating pairs of rollers/cylinders. Upon a reduction of the center-to-center distance from the initial adjustment position, the flexible members are formed and/or adapted to be compressed with elastic, resilient deformation.
