ABSTRACT A coupling mehcanism is provided with a helical spring whose outside engages the interior of a stationary sleeve. The inside of the spring is closely spaced, at a clearance of about 0.2 mm from a cylindric shaft, e.g. a shaft of a servomotor. At least one end of the coil spring has a lug engaged by a hand wheel or the like assembly. Turning the hand wheel such as to contract the coil results in gradual engagement of the shaft by the spring to thus couple the wheel and the shaft. If the shaft becomes driven by the motor in any direction, the torque disengages the coil virtually instantly. The coupling is particularly suitable for connecting a hand wheel to a servomotor unit. Further embodiment wherein the transmission of the hand wheel or the like torque is effected in both directions is also disclosed. The advance of the device over prior art is in its quick disengagement when the shaft becomes driven, and also in the simplicity of the overall structure.
