ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a cell for producing aluminum by fused salt electrolysis the direct electric current is led off via iron cathode bars; these are situated in channels in carbon blocks and are held in place for example by cast iron cast-in around them; each side-wall of the channel features a recess which extends the whole length of the carbon block and which accommodates the liquid cast iron; in the working position these recesses in the upper part of the channel feature inclined faces which widen outwards towards the opening in the channel and join up at their lower end with supporting faces which are approximately horizontal and terminate at the corresponding side-wall; the inclination (a) of the conical side-walls to the vertical is preferably between 3 and 15°.
