A B S T R A C T A method is described of enhancing the efficiency of laser processing of metals using a first last operating at a first wavelength by preprocessing with a second laser so as to define a track of reduced reflectivity. This is achieved by establishing areas on the metal surface to be worked and irradiating the areas with the second laser operating at a second and different wavelength from the first wavelength. The second laser is chosen to exhibit a significantly reduced reflectivity at the surface of the metal compared with the first wavelength. This decreases reflectivity of the surface to radiation of the first wavelength to improve efficiency of subsequent working by the first laser in the areas.
