The preprinted code is representative of the postal zip code of the mailing's addressee. The mailing is contained in a windowed envelope such that the code is visible through the envelope window. A optical reader reads the code from the address field and drives a printer such that a bar/half-bar representation of the postal zip code is printed on the exterior of the envelope.
