ABSTRACT A measurement device including an elongated, flexible rack 30 which is normally curved in cross- section to define opposite concave and convex surfaces. The rack characterized by a plurality of perforations longitudinally disposed adjacent at least one of its edges. The rack is normally straight, but may be radially bent toward either said concave or convex surface with the rack having the tendency to spring back to its normally straight orientation. A rotatably mounted sprocket wheel assembly 262 having sprockets 304 for engaging the perforations in said rack and a cylindrical surface 300 for receiving said rack convex surface radially bent thereagainst is provided along with a position encoder 32 coupled with the sprocket wheel assembly.
