- 18 - ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for providing information as to the cross-sectional shape of a body such as a steel bar or railway wheel is disclosed. When such information is provided by viewing devices, such as video cameras, the image of the body is distorted due to geometric relationships between the light, source, object and camera. Therefore accurate information is difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem the invention utilizes reference points (20, 74, and 94) which are formed in proximity to the body (12 and 80) and the body is illuminated with a thin beam of light from a laser (10 and 76). A distorted image of the body and reference points is provided by camera (14 and 78). The image of the reference points is transformed by an image processing computer (16) to transform the image of the reference points to their correct relationship with respect to one another and the image of the body undergoes the same transformation to thereby provide a true indication of the shape of the body (12).
