This invention provides apparatus and a method for measuring the concentration of alumina in a molten electrolyte in a smelter. A test anode (101) (a mimic of the actual cell anode) supplied from a computer-controlled voltage source (303) with several to about (100) rapid cyclic voltammetry sweeps seeks the voltage at which the anode effect occurs, as sensed by current measurement (305). In order to derive a measurement the voltage is compared within the computer (301) to previous measurements made from a calibration set of alumina samples in known concentrations. Brief rapid cycles and an improved electrode configuration help to provide results from the invention which are reproducible and accurate, and in addition the test electrode has a long life.

Cette invention se rapporte à un appareil et à un procédé de mesure de la concentration d'oxyde d'aluminium d'un électrolyte en fusion dans un four de fusion. Une anode test (101) (imitant l'anode cellulaire réelle) alimentée par une source de tension (303) gérée par ordinateur reçoit un certain nombre, voire jusqu'à environ 100 cycles de balayage voltampèremétriques rapides pour rechercher la tension à laquelle se produit l'effet d'anode, tel que détecté par la mesure de courant (305). Afin d'extraire une mesure, la tension est comparée dans l'ordinateur (301) aux mesures précédentes obtenues par un ensemble d'étalonnage des échantillons d'oxyde d'aluminium de concentrations connues. Des cycles rapides et brefs et une meilleure configuration d'électrode permettent d'obtenir des résultats reproductibles et précis, l'électrode test ayant de plus une durée de vie longue.
