ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A transducer for providing an output signal propor- tional to the concentration of anaesthetic gas in a breathing mixture is disclosed. The transducer includes a sensor intended to be exposed to a breathing mixture containing anaesthetic gas and electrical circuit means. The sensor forms an electrical capacitor and comprises first and second electrical conductors positioned in proximity to one another and defining a space therebetween, and a substantially non-conductive material filling said space and forming a dielectric of said capacitor. The material is either a lipid or an elastomer and has a molecular struc- ture which permits the absorption of the anaesthetic gas and a dielectric constant which changes in proportion to changes in the concentration of said anaesthetic gas. The electric circuit means is coupled to the sensor and is adapted to provide an output signal proportional to the variations in the capacitance of the sensor.
