ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for measuring the surface quality of a lens, especially a contact lens, comprising the steps of directing a beam of substantially collimated electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength in the range 200nm to 2000nm onto the surface of the lens, and measuring the intensity of the specularly reflected light from the surface of the lens. In one embodiment of the invention the method is carried out during laser polishing of the lens by laser irradiation.
