ABSTRACT A borehole probe for use in analysing or carrying ground using non- disposure x-ray fluorescence is described. A Co-57 radiation source is housed within a shield which defines with another shield a conical collimator which directs primary radiation to the surrounding earth. A detector is shielded by the other shield from direct radiation from the source. The other shield is formed in two parts, a top conical part and a bottom cylindrical part which has a window for permitting secondary radiation arising in the ore-bearing surround earth to pass to the detector. The source and detector can be moved axially towards and away from each other to achieve a desirable angle of backscatter. The source and detector can he located very close to each other so that this angle approaches 180° which is the optimum angle.
