Radar is used to measure not only the level of slag (3) on molten steel (2) but also its thickness. The measurement is used to calculate the volume of slag (3), and, in tum the amount of additives for slag treatment. Time-of-flight data are used to identify peaks representing the distances of the surfaces of the slag (3) and the surface of the underlying steel (2). The concept is applicable to other materials of differing composition, and particularly where the underlying material is relatively more conductive than the overlying material.

La présente invention concerne l'utilisation d'un radar pour mesurer non seulement le niveau du laitier (3) sur l'acier fondu (2), mais également son épaisseur. Cette mesure permet de calculer le volume du laitier (3), et par conséquent la quantité d'additifs nécessaire au traitement du laitier. Les données de temps de vol permettent d'identifier des crêtes représentant les distances entre les surfaces du laitier (3) et la surface de l'acier sous-jacent (2). Ce concept est applicable à d'autres matériaux de composition différente, et particulièrement dans le cas où le matériau sous-jacent est relativement plus électroconducteur que le matériau surnageant.
