The present invention relates to a device and method which may be used to reinforce the native annulus during spinal surgery. The device is a catheter based device which is placed into the inter-vertebral space following discectomy. The distal end of the catheter is comprised of an expansile loop which may be increased in diameter by advancement of a portion of the catheter via its proximal end, such proximal end remaining external to the body. The expansile loop may be formed such that when the loop Is diametrically contracted the loop feeds into its other end. Stabilization of the outer portion of the loop and pulling out the inner portion will thereby increase the overall diameter of the loop while maintaining it as a closed loop or torus. The expansile loop can use an attachment means to secure it to substantially healthy tissues of the annulus, nucleus, or endplates.
La présente invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé qui peuvent être utilisés pour renforcer l'anneau naturel pendant une chirurgie rachidienne. Le dispositif est un dispositif reposant sur un cathéter que l'on place dans l'espace entre les vertèbres à la suite d'une ablation de disque réalisée selon des approches traditionnelles chirurgicales ou endoscopiques. L'extrémité distale du cathéter se compose d'une boucle extensible dont le diamètre peut être accru en faisant avancer une partie du cathéter par le biais de son extrémité proximale, ladite extrémité proximale restant externe au corps. La boucle extensible peut être constituée de telle sorte que lorsque la boucle se contracte diamétralement la boucle pénètre dans son autre extrémité, un peu comme un serpent se mordant la queue. La stabilisation de la partie externe de la boucle et la traction de la partie interne va ainsi augmenter le diamètre global de la boucle tout en la maintenant sous forme de boucle fermée ou tore. La boucle extensible peut utiliser un moyen de fixation pour s'attacher à des tissus sensiblement sains de l'anneau, du noyau, ou des plaques d'extrémité. La présente invention comprend quatre modes de réalisation et peut s'utiliser pour 1) faciliter la fusion de disque, 2) réaliser un remplacement artificiel du noyau, 3) réaliser un remplacement artificiel de l'anneau, ou 4) réaliser un remplacement artificiel à la fois du noyau et de l'anneau.
