A device and method to reinforce the annulus during spinal surgery. The device is placed into the intervertebral space following discectomy. The distal end of a catheter is comprised of an expansile loop which may be increased in diameter by advancement of a portion of the catheter via its proximal end. The expansile loop may be formed such that when the loop is diametrically contracted the loop feeds into its other end. Stabilization of the outer portion of the loop and pulling out the inner portion will thereby increase the overall diameter of the loop while maintaining it as a closed loop or torus. The expansile loop can use an attachment means to secure it to substantially healthy tissues of the annulus, nucleus, or endplates. The present invention comprises four embodiments and can be used for disc fusion, artificial replacement of the nucleus, artificial replacement of the annulus, or both.
L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé pour renforcer l'anneau fibreux lors d'une chirurgie rachidienne. Le dispositif est placé dans l'espace intervertébral après une discectomie. L'extrémité distale d'un cathéter est composée d'une boucle extensible dont le diamètre peut être augmenté en faisant avancer une partie du cathéter via son extrémité proximale. La boucle extensible peut être formée de sorte que lorsque la boucle est contractée diamétralement, la boucle est canalisée dans son autre extrémité. Une stabilisation de la partie extérieure de la boucle et l'extraction de la partie intérieure augmenteront de ce fait le diamètre global de la boucle, tout en la maintenant sous la forme d'une boucle fermée ou d'un tore. La boucle extensible peut utiliser un moyen de fixation pour sa fixation sur des tissus sensiblement sains de l'anneau, du noyau ou des plaques d'extrémité. La présente invention comporte quatre modes de réalisation et peut être utilisée pour une fusion de disque, pour un remplacement artificiel du noyau, un remplacement artificiel de l'anneau, ou pour les deux remplacements.
