A mechanical dilatation and medicament delivery device (11) for enlarging a flow passage of a vessel by dilating and delivering a therapeutic agent or medicament (40) to an obstruction in the vessel. The present invention comprises a substantially cylindrically shaped expansion member (31) and includes a means engaged to the expansion member for altering the distance between the proximal end and the distal end of the expansion member thereby transforming the expansion member between a diametrically contracted configuration to diametrically expanded configuration. A therapeutic agent or medicament (40) is coated on either the expansion member (31), or incorporated into a substrate (93) coated on the expansion member. The present method comprises the steps of advancing the coated expansion member to the obstruction in a vessel and applying opposed forces on said expansion member in an axial direction to move the expansion member to an expanded configuration wherein the expansion member dilates the obstruction and the expansion member either passively or actively delivers a therapeutic agent or .medicament to the obstruction.
L'invention concerne un appareil d'agrandissement mécanique et d'administration de médicaments (11) servant à agrandir par dilatation un passage d'acheminement d'un vaisseau et à administrer un agent thérapeutique ou un médicament (40) sur un site obstrué du vaisseau. L'appareil comprend un élément d'agrandissement (31) sensiblement cylindrique et un moyen en contact avec l'élément d'agrandissement pour modifier la distance entre l'extrémité proximale et l'extrémité distale de l'élément d'agrandissement, faisant ainsi passer ce dernier d'une configuration diamétralement contractée à une configuration diamétralement agrandie. Un agent thérapeutique ou médicament (40) est soit enrobé sur l'élément d'agrandissement (31), soit incorporé dans un substrat (43) enrobé sur l'élément d'agrandissement. Le procédé de l'invention consiste à avancer l'élément d'agrandissement enrobé vers le site obstrué d'un vaisseau, et à exercer des forces contraires sur ledit élément d'agrandissement, dans un sens axial, afin de déplacer l'élément d'agrandissement pour lui faire adopter une configuration agrandie dans laquelle l'élément d'agrandissement dilate le site obstrué et y administre passivement ou activement un agent thérapeutique ou médicament.
