A waterproof membrane capable of serving as a barrier by purely mechanical means to the growth of tree and herbaceous roots. The said membrane comprises n layers of non-woven having a pre-determined thickness and n+1 layers of waterproof material with holes to allow water to drain, where n is a whole number equal to or greater than 1. The two types of layers alternate from type to type so that two of the layers of waterproof material form exterior layers of the membrane, and each layer of non-woven is between two layers of waterproof material.
