In the bottling industry, there exists machinery designed to remove bottles from a shipping container such as a cardboard or plastic case. There are two main components to this operation: a machine to support, align and index the case of bottles, and a set of mechanical bottle grippers to remove the bottles by gripping the neck of each bottle. Each bottle gripper removes one bottle at a given time. The grippers are in a fixed alignment with the bottles as they appear in the case. The machine operates the individual grippers through a translating cam which, through linkages, closes or opens the gripper jaws against the neck of the bottle. As the array of grippers is closed on a case of bottles, another mechanism on the machine lifts the grippers and bottles out of the case, usually discharging them onto a conveyor where the bottles proceed to be rinsed and filled. This invention is a mechanical bottle gripper designed for use on such a machine, that is, it is designed to grip a bottle by the neck in a pair of jaws that can be opened or closed by the action of an external cam.
